Work ethic redefined. What it really means to do hard things.

You did well in school. You got your first job when you were 16. You get good performance reviews. You get promoted. You like a challenge. You have a strong work ethic, right?

Maybe not. If you’re checking the boxes and not truly challenging yourself to do what’s scary, or what stretches you, or what you thought was impossible, you’re missing the chance to learn what a real work ethic is.

We think that by completing our work, or logging long hours we’re demonstrating a strong work ethic. And that’s certainly part of it.

But real work results in harnessing your mind and living up to your full potential. You don’t measure that based on the hours you spend at your desk. You do measure that based on how you show up.

There’s only one way to get there and that’s by figuring out what you most fear, then deciding to put yourself into those situations on purpose. Maybe you do it a little at a time. Maybe you make sure you have plenty of support. But the key is to stop avoiding what’s scary.

How can you learn to face those fears? Coaching can give you the skills.

Coaching is one way — and a valuable shortcut — to learn skills to identify what your goals are, enjoy making big decisions, and handle those times when you’re freaking out.

How do you learn to do what frightens you the most? Practice.

It takes mental discipline to figure out what challenges you want to face, and then skills to go out and face them. Your brain will give you plenty of reasons to avoid anything new or scary.

But when you are able to work through the fears and doubts, you cross over into a new world of opportunity.

Will you falter? Will you feel foolish? Will you feel humiliated? Ashamed? Scared and queasy? Yes.

Should you do it anyway? Yes. Because that’s the real way to challenge yourself and to grow.

Coaching can give you:

  1. The objectivity of an outside perspective to help you identify what scares you most.

  2. Skills to help you figure out what you want and then to go after it.

  3. The support you need to face your fears, and to do hard things so you can stop holding yourself back.
